Beer, Glorious Beer

Somewhere in my 30’s I picked up the delicious taste for beer. Gradually, I switched from drinking wine at parties and while eating out. I still drink Reds, especially in the winter with a nice leisurely meal of steak or fish, but for most burger, salad, or just mac and cheese meals, I’ll pick beer.

Luckily, there are many craft beers from which to choose. We must be living in a golden age for craft beers and even home brewers. There are lots of local breweries now( Black Box, Brew Kettle, Buckeye, Cornerstone, Griffin Cider Works, Hoppin’ Frog, Lagerheads, and Portside to name a few). Of course, we first think of Great Lakes and their big selectionBeer Glorious Beer and easy availability at grocery stores. Thirsty Dog from Akron is big too. I prefer their Christmas Ale to all others. Fat Head is popular. All of these make great amber ales. I’m also developing a taste for double malt IPAs.

Pilsners and lagers generally bore me but I think that is because I don’t have the refined tongue of beer purists. I get stuck in a rut. For many years I only drank merlot and finally got over myself and went to pinot noir. Now I drink almost any red wine with gusto. I think I’m beginning to get more diversified with beer too.

In the summer we like to try fruited beer. We’ve enjoyed Pyramid Apricot ale. Yesterday Dave tried Fruli Strawberry Ale. When we were in Florida I fell in love with Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan Ale. Sometimes the memory is better than the real thing, however.

Speaking of summer and beer; this is one of the seasons for beer festivals (the other being in the fall with Octoberfest). The first one is coming up at Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica. For $40 general admission you can taste 150 beers and stroll through the Art of Beer Experience. My trouble with beer and wine tastings is that I am such a lightweight. Even with tiny samples, I am done after just a few. It seems steep to pay that much money to have 6-8 shot glasses of beer and I’m not knowledgeable enough to know which breweries and beers to glorious beer

I choose to believe that beer is not only tasty but healthy. I think most people believe that they should only drink red wine in moderation for good health. I’m believing that beer and cocktails are also good for you.  Why not? If it makes you healthier but also kills brain cells, maybe science should explore the connection. In the meantime, Cheers!
