Date Night

Every week Dave or I pick up a Scene, look it over for ideas of fun stuff to do, then recycle it. We just don’t go out at night unless we have arrangements made by other people.  Our movies are matinees and we often don’t feel the need to pay the big-ticket price for most concerts.

Some couples have a once a week date night come hell or high water. We never established that routine. So when we do have a “date night” it feels rather special.

Then I heard about a tiki lounge on West 25th and decided we had to try it.  We’ve joked about making the raised dining room platform in our loft into a tiki bar. We’ve eyed various items to decorate it and I had visions of serving those exotic rum drinks with little umbrellas decorating the roiling liquid.

First we stopped at Porco Lounge to check out the bamboo curtains, Polynesian cups, and puffer fish ceiling light.  I ordered a Painkiller Level I and Dave had a Fog builder that came out with dry ice on top. Both drinks were expensive, sweet and went down in a hurry but, hey, we were in a tiki bar!

We headed to our next venue at Reddstone near Battery Park. After dinner there we headed upstairs for a comedy show that was advertised to begin at 8pm.  Well, I think that time was set so the audience could sit around, drink, and get in the proper mood. The evening was being taped to make a CD and we were encouraged several times to laugh a lot and not talk. The audience was mostly 20 and 30 Somethings and didn’t need to be encouraged to laugh. When the show began at 9pm I felt there were a couple of guys sitting in front of us who laughed so hard I thought they’d stroke out. Ryan Dalton was the headliner and, apparently, is a staple in the local comedy scene.

The routines were the usual pokes at women, roommates, relatives, sex, and how people dress. Still, when you are in a room of 50 people who want to LMAO and who are mildly looped, it is hard not to join in. Things that aren’t funny when you are alone and too sober are suddenly hilarious. Oh well, it’s therapeutic. We had a good time.

Let’s say we got our date night fix covered for another couple of months. Maybe we should take the advice of our more lively friends and get out more often.
